FAQ

Quick answers about our kits, plant care and orders.

Kits & building

What's inside a kit?

A glass jar with an LED-lit lid, clay pebbles for drainage, activated charcoal, soil mix, live plants, moss, decorative stones, a tool set, gloves and a work mat. And a step-by-step guide.

I've never made a terrarium. Is it hard?

Not at all. Our kits are made for first-timers. Follow the guide layer by layer and you will be done in about an hour.

Which size should I choose?

Small (1 qt jar) fits on a desk or a windowsill. Medium (2 qt jar) is our most popular size. Large (1 gal jar) makes a real centerpiece and has room for more plants.

How soon should I build my kit?

Open the box the day it arrives and take the plants out. Then build within a week. Until then, keep the plants in bright light out of direct sun and mist them lightly every couple of days.

Is it a good gift?

Yes! Just remember the plants are alive, so the person should build the kit within a few days.

Is it safe for kids and pets?

Kids can build a kit with an adult. Stones and figurines are small parts, so keep them away from young children and pets.

Plant care

How often do I water a closed terrarium?

Very rarely. A closed jar recycles its own water, so a light misting about once a month is usually enough.

Where should I put my jar?

In bright, indirect light. Keep it out of direct sun: glass heats up fast and can cook the plants.

The glass is foggy. Is that okay?

A little fog in the morning is normal. If the glass stays fully fogged all day, open the lid for a few hours to let extra water out.

I see white fuzz or mold. What do I do?

Remove it with the tweezers, take out any dead leaves and leave the lid open for a day. This usually means the jar is a bit too wet.

How long will my terrarium live?

With a little care, for years. Trim plants when they touch the glass, and they will keep growing happily.
